Chapter 24

Biding Time

I’d thought that all I needed to do from that moment was bide my time, but I quickly learned what a fools’ errand that was.

It started to feel like I was waiting on something that was never going to happen. I kept waiting for some sign, some indication my wife was trying to have an extramarital bit of fun with Liam, but that sign never came.

I watched her like a hawk on her phone. Only if she was doing something on her phone she was damn good about covering it up. I watched for any indication that she was looking to sneak out after hours, but again that never happened.

No, she lived her life like normal. She’d do the occasional run to the post office to drop off something for her online store, but I timed those trips. She was never gone long enough that it made me think she was running off for a bit of extracurricular fun with another man.

It was funny. That was the sort of thing that should’ve made me happy, but instead it just pissed me off. What kind of guy desperately wants his woman to cheat on him? Apparently I was the kind of guy. Damn it.

It was enough that I was grousing about it at the pool a few days later. Though it didn’t start like that. Not exactly.

“Are you okay?” Maggie asked, looking at me with genuine concern.

“Why wouldn’t I be okay?” I asked, though it sounded defensive even to me.

I figured if even I was able to recognize my bullshit then it meant other people knew something was up. Finally I sighed.

“It’s the whole thing with Kim and Liam.”

Both of them turned to stare at me, their eyes wide.

“Are you saying something finally happened?” Andrea asked, staring intently.

I looked at them and blinked a couple of times, then realized what they were getting at.

“What? No, nothing has happened!”

“So let me get this straight,” Maggie said, talking slowly. Like she was trying to work something out. “You’re telling me your wife hasn’t cheated on you, and you’re upset about that?”

I sighed as I looked at the two women who’d come to feel like both my counselors, my sounding board, and my partners in crime with this whole crazy enterprise.

I hadn’t told them about the revelation I had that night I was fucking Kim. Even that seemed like it was a touch too far. Only I was starting to realize I’d have to tell them everything eventually. There was no getting around it if they were going to help me

And I was starting to realize, perhaps a little too late, that I really needed their help. Everything that had happened with Kim and Liam had happened under their watch and with their help, after all.

I wasn’t sure if that was by design or by some strange coincidence of the universe. Either way, I was starting to go stir crazy waiting for something to happen, and that meant I was willing to try new things that would’ve felt crazy to me not all that long ago.
